Wagons
The NYMRT has a Collection Policy for its heritage wagons. The variety of wagon types within the collection reflects the industrial history of the region and the important role railways played in transporting goods across North Yorkshire and the wider North East.
The heritage wagon fleet is cared for by the Wagon Group, a dedicated team of volunteers whose work focuses on preserving, restoring and maintaining these historic vehicles. Their efforts enable the railway to operate a Demonstration Wagon Set on as many days as possible throughout the year.
The NYMRT seeks to maintain a collection representative of the wagons that would have operated on the Whitby to Pickering route and across the wider North Eastern Railway network throughout the life of the line. This includes:
-
Vehicles of particular relevance to the route and the region
-
Vehicles representative of those found in station goods yards
-
Vehicles appropriate to goods trains operating along the route
The wagon collection includes the Demonstration Wagon Set, static display vehicles and operational wagons used to support the maintenance of the railway.
Demonstration Wagon Set
The NYMRT's Demonstration Wagon Set currently comprises 25 vehicles and provides an opportunity to showcase the wide range of wagons once used on Britain's railways. It also highlights the work of the volunteer Wagon Group, which operates as part of the Carriage and Wagon Department and undertakes the overhaul, restoration, repair and maintenance of heritage wagons.
The team works to a long-term programme of major overhauls, ensuring the collection can continue to be enjoyed by future generations.
The Demonstration Wagon Set operates regularly throughout the year, typically consisting of around ten wagons. It provides visitors with the opportunity to see and photograph historic freight vehicles and, on some occasions, travel in a guards van. During 2024, the set operated on 17 days. Special photographic charters are also arranged throughout the year.
Details of upcoming demonstration days and other special events will be added to the website when details are available.
The overhaul and development of the collection is supported through donations.
Static Display Wagons
The NYMR has a number of wagons on static display around the railway. Some are displayed alongside the line, while others have been adapted for operational or visitor use.
At Goathland Station, two 5-plank wagons (577 and 3697), owned by the Hull and Barnsley Railway Stock Fund and on loan to the NYMRT, provide seating for visitors to the Warehouse Tea Room. Further information is available from the Hull and Barnsley Railway Stock Fund.
Permanent Way Department Wagons
The NYMR also operates a fleet of wagons used by the Permanent Way Department. Most are not heritage vehicles, but they play an important role in the day-to-day maintenance of the railway, supporting track work and helping to keep the line safe and operational.
Searchable Database
The database below provides details of the wagons within the NYMRT collection. You can browse and sort the collection by vehicle type, status and other key information to explore the variety of wagons preserved on the railway.
