Blow the cobwebs away this festive season with a day out on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Our Winter Steamer services run daily from 27 December to 3 January, including New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, between Pickering and Goathland. And the best bit? One child (4-15 years old) travels for free with every fare-paying adult, making it even easier to enjoy a festive family day out.

Climb aboard our cosy 1903 North Eastern Railway Autocar, or sit back behind one of our heritage steam locomotives as it climbs through the heart of the North York Moors National Park. Your ticket lets you hop-on and hop-off throughout the day between Pickering, Levisham, Newtondale Halt, and Goathland, so you can stretch your legs on a winter walk or spend some time exploring before catching a later train back.

Free Film Trail

The NYMR has starred in plenty of film and television productions over the years, including Harry Potter, Heartbeat, Indiana Jones, Mission Impossible, and our favourite, Steam Train Diaries (pictured).

Pick up your free self-guided Film Trail and discover where key scenes were shot along the line. Look out for signage at our stations and information on board as you travel.

Book Tickets

Member Tickets

As the Autocar service has fewer seats available, we’d recommend booking in advance. If you’re flexible on timings, our later steam services offer a quieter journey through the frosty North York Moors, and with greater capacity on the later return trains, you’ll have plenty of room to sit back and enjoy the views.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Winter Steamer sessions are taking place in our closed-season, and so, whilst we prepare for our full reopening for the 2027 season, we are offering shorter journeys for visitors to enjoy in the Twixmas (between Christmas and New Year) period.

Over the winter period, we have planned vital maintenance between Goathland and Grosmont. These works include track works, signalling and bridge works.

We continue to raise funds to complete the essential maintenance on Bridge 42 and you can donate here.

Services will operate between Pickering and Goathland, giving passengers the opportunity to explore all the NYMR and the North York Moors National Park has to offer at this magical time of year
