Online Sales Assistant
You’ll be an integral part of the online shopping experience, checking and processing orders on our online shop. You will be using our system to pull down orders, identify and locate stock, and pack it up for posting. This is a back-office role but offers a great insight into the retail department and is based in a unique environment on Pickering Station.
Footplate Crew
POSITIONS PAUSED UNTIL JANUARY 2027 - You’ll begin your journey as Cleaner, an important step on the road to potentially becoming a driver. It is the Cleaner’s responsibility to undertake several duties, while learning the skills and gaining the experience to step into the safety critical roles of fireman, and eventually driver.
Tea Room Assistant - Pickering Station
In this role, you’ll help to prepare food and drinks, serve our visitors, deal with enquiries, and undertake other necessary tasks to help deliver an exceptional service. You’ll work as part of a team providing excellent customer service.
Catering Event Support
This role involves creating a positive, engaging experience for our passengers by assisting our Catering Manager with on-site needs as they arise and be the welcoming face of the NYMR and play a vital part in the successful delivery of events.

North Yorkshire Pullman Kitchen Porter
POSITIONS PAUSED UNTIL JANUARY 2026 - Enjoy an unforgettable work experience as you travel through the breathtaking North York Moors National Park working within a close nit team providing a memorable journey through the heart of Yorkshire’s stunning countryside.
Door Steward
To ensure the safe operation of our Whitby services that run over Network Rail, making sure that nobody is leaning out the windows and providing a point of contact for the passengers. You will be allocated a set of 4 doors by the guard who will give you a briefing at the start of the day. Monday to Saturday involves 4 trips between Grosmont and Whitby, starting at 08:45 with two lengthy breaks in Whitby and Grosmont. On Sunday’s we run one train to Whitby on the pink timetable (10:30 – 15:00) and two trains on the blue timetable (10:30 – 17:00).
Estates Support
There are a few areas that need your help in Estates. Admin support to our Estates Manager and the team. Stores Person to help our Estates and servicing team. Carriage cleaners for the external care of our running fleet. A degree of physical fitness will be required for the physical roles.
Shed Shop Donations Assistant
You’ll be involved in helping process the many varied donations we receive for sale in the Shed Shop. This is a position for someone who has a knowledge and understanding of secondhand goods and their worth, particularly model railways, railway books and railwayana. The role involves record keeping and sorting and may involve working with auction houses and at model railway events. You will need to be methodical and organised in your approach, as well as being physically fit to lift and carry boxes to and from the Shed Shop.
Short Form Social Media Content Creator
Filming and some editing of short form video content across the railway, creating engaging reels, TikToks, and short videos for social platforms, capturing day-to-day life, events, locomotives, and people. Working with the marketing and events teams to align content with campaigns, identifying trends and adapting them to suit the railway, and ensuring content reflects the NYMR's tone, brand, and values. This includes attending events to capture live content, as well as organising and submitting content for approval and scheduling.
Booking Office Clerk
POSITIONS PAUSED FOR NOVEMBER & DECEMBER - Often the first point of contact for our visitors and an integral part of the whole visitor experience, you’ll inform our visitors of the ticketing options available to them, take both cash and card payments, and encourage our visitors to Gift Aid their purchases.
IT Trainer
The Volunteer IT Trainer will provide basic, practical IT training and support to NYMR staff and volunteers. Many of our team come from non-technical backgrounds, and this role exists to build their confidence with everyday computing tasks, from sending emails to staying safe online.
The trainer will deliver dedicated training sessions and informal drop-in sessions along the line, where volunteers and staff can seek help with simple IT queries.
Guide Book Seller
You will begin your day by collecting Guide Books and a cash float from Pickering or Grosmont Station Shop. You’ll then head out onto the trains where you’ll spend your day selling books and talking to passengers. At the end of the day, you’ll return to your starting point and count up your sales and cash takings.
Education & Community Engagement
The NYMR is a heritage railway and living museum which remains highly relevant to our lives today and for the future. Education & Community Engagement volunteers support a wide range of learning activities for all ages, both on and off site.
Station Staff
Station staff assist our visitors with boarding and alighting from our services, and by providing information. Reporting to the Station Foreman and liaising with other staff, volunteers, and departments, you will ensure that the station areas are safe and tidy.
Shop Assistant
You’ll be an integral part of the whole visitor experience, helping to deal with any enquiries in a pleasant and friendly way. As Shop Assistant you will serve customers, provide excellent customer service and help drive sales, all in a unique environment. Confident to Open and Close outlets.
Armstrong Oilers Volunteer
Axle box oilers are made from raw materials in house using heritage equipment to maintain authenticity. A small team of highly skilled people work with strip metal to make parts, weave pads, and assemble and dispatch the finished product using a variety of methods and machinery.
Pullman Steward
Our Pullman Stewards provide an excellent and friendly service to our dining passengers on our historic Pullman carriages. It’s a fast paced and unique hospitality environment, where you’ll be working as part of a team helping to deliver a premium product.
Pullman Carriage Caretaker
The Pullman fleet of carriages need some care and attention to keep them looking their best for their journeys carrying guests as they dine on the 18 mile stretch of line.
Welcome Hosts
You’ll be an integral part of the whole visitor experience and often the first point of contact for our visitors. You’ll meet and greet our visitors and help to answer any enquiries in a pleasant and friendly way. You’ll give directions, and help ensure their visit is memorable.
North Yorkshire Pullman Bar Person
Delivering a quality bar and beverage service to our passengers onboard the dining train, offering excellent customer experience while maintaining safety, hygiene, and service standards on our very popular Pullman dining experiences.
Lineside Fire Patroller
Lineside Fire Patrollers play a vital role in keeping our steam services running safely, driving the line between Levisham and Goathland to spot and report any signs of fire. It’s an active, outdoor role where no two days are the same.
