Hull and Barnsley Railway Stock Fund

The Hull and Barnsley Railway Stock Fund have long had a presence on the NYMR and the working relationship continues: their open wagons are on permanent display in use as part of the seating in the Warehouse Tea Room at Goathland. Plans are being developed to use restored carriages for special days and events. Find out more about the group.

The aim of the Group, founded in 1968, was to preserve and protect a representative collection of Hull & Barnsley Railway passenger and goods rolling stock, for use by, and for the education of the public in the art and technique of railway coach builders.

The first Stock item the Group acquired was coach 58 which was initially located at Springhead works and at the end November 1968 arrived at the embryonic NYMR. It was used alongside Borrows Well Tank as the first “unofficial” passenger train on the NYMR. Coach 58 is a 6 compartment brake third bogie carriage and was built in 1909. It is back at the NYMR and requires further renovation work to complete the works commenced at Hull College.

Coach 40 came to the NYMR in late 1969. It is a 6 compartment brake third bogie carriage and was built in 1907. Currently located at the NYMR where plans are being developed by H&BRSF to restore it.

Coach 1 is a 3 compartment four wheel brake third which was built in 1885. This vehicle is currently undergoing restoration and provision of underframe and wheels at Boston Lodge Works on the Ffestiniog Railway. Coach 1 was used in France during late 1918/early 1919. It then resided in Wales and between 1926 and 1986 was used for domestic habitation.
