Volunteers’ Week 2024 is a national campaign that celebrates the amazing contributions volunteers make to communities across the UK, and this year marks its 40th Anniversary. The event will take place between Monday 3rd June and Sunday 9th June.

To mark this special occasion, the NYMR is hosting a ‘drop-in’ session for prospective volunteers as part of our ongoing recruitment efforts. Join us on Tuesday 4 June from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at Pickering Station, Platform 2, in our Learning Centre Classroom. Here, you'll have the opportunity to meet our staff and volunteers, learn about how to get involved, understand what being a volunteer at the NYMR entails, and discover the lifelong rewards that come with volunteering at our heritage railway and accredited museum.

As well as working on the locomotive footplate, volunteers are needed in the NYMR’s Infrastructure and Motive Power departments, to assist with the full breadth of civil engineering, building, electrical and mechanical work - not to mention the maintenance, repairs and overhaul of its fleet of steam and diesel locomotives. Other vital volunteer roles include station staff, signalling and telecommunications, customer service, retail, catering, fundraising, and education. As well as community engagement, admin, and even remote working.
