Service Update 21/12/2020

Due to the ever-changing Covid-19 environment we have unfortunately made the decision to cancel our planned Optimist and Rail Trail services between 26th December to 3rd January.

Our Santa Re-Imagined event (21st – 24th December) and Christmas Moorlander (31st December – 3rd January) will still go ahead as planned over the festive holiday.

We are disappointed to make this choice; however, we feel that this is the responsible decision. Nevertheless, we will be reviewing this every fortnight. We also have some exciting news for February Half Term (13th -21st February) which we will release in the New Year.

We apologise sincerely for the inconvenience this may cause and if you have a booing for either the Optimist or Rail Trail, our Customer Service team will be in touch.

Our return service, The Optimist currently runs from Pickering to Whitby. You can hop off at any Station (If you choose to disembark at an intermediate Station**, please speak to the Train Guard) and return back on the Optimist in your pre-booked seats. 

If you choose to disembark at any intermediate station, due to the current timetable and Covid-19 constraints, you will not be able to travel to Whitby and must return to Pickering on the returning leg of your outbound journey.

Book our Freedom Ticket and have the option to travel on The Optimist and transfer to the Rail Trail*** service. Alternatively you can stay on The Optimist to travel to Whitby and return only.

Passengers travel in a standard TSO Carriage (min 1/max 4) with social distancing measures in place. Passengers include children from 1 years old. A face covering must be worn (unless exempt) whilst on board the train or when moving around the railway.

If you give a donation, are a UK Taxpayer and complete a Gift Aid declaration, we can claim an additional 25% tax back from the Government at no cost to you. Enjoy travelling the full 24 miles behind a heritage steam locomotive.

Goathland & Levisham facilities will remain closed.   

Occasionally, due to operational requirements, we may substitute a steam engine with a diesel locomotive.

Discounted Tickets: 

  • Members (Standard, Life, Premier Life, Premier First & Shareholders)Tickets are available on both services, with a limited capacity. You must pre-book in advance. You will need to enter your Membership ID when booking. Members receive 50% discount on the Standard Ticket Price. 100% discount only applies to normal services
  • Gift Vouchers & Outstanding Bookings: If you have been issued a Gift Voucher or have a booking held you can redeem these for our services via Customer Service Team.
  • Discounted Tickets : Interrail/HRA - 50% (Adult), ATOC/RST - 75% (Adult/Child). These discounts are applicable on Standard prices and can be booked via Customer Service Team.
  • Carer Tickets: These can be booked via the Customer Service team and you will be an issued with a free ticket for your carer when you purchase a standard ticket. Wheelchairs and Pushchairs can be stored in the Guards Van. You must be able to transfer to your pre-booked seat.
