We are pleased to officially open Peter’s Railway Young Engineers Centre on Thursday 14^th April after staff and volunteers from across the railway worked over 1500 hours to construct the interactive exhibition, on platform 2, Pickering Station.

This new exhibition has been put together with the help and expertise of children’s author Chris Vine; using his knowledge and understanding of engineering to create exciting and interactive displays through storytelling and technical diagrams.

Chris Vine, children’s author, said “The Peter’s Railway Young Engineer’s Centre at the NYMR is a fantastic free opportunity for children to learn about engineering and science.

Having the President of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, Professor Richard Folkson, officially open the interactive display space is a great honour for the NYMR.”

Year 5 students from Pickering Junior School attended the official launch which displays interactive learning exhibits created from upcycled locomotive and carriage parts with activities such as ‘Blow up a grown-up’ and ‘Spin the Dynamo’.

Chris Price, General Manager at NYMR, “Getting youngsters interested in the world of science and engineering is something I feel is vital. There are so many fascinating careers in engineering, especially in the railway industry. Volunteering on the NYMR provides important hands-on experience when applying for jobs or college/university places”.
