The NYMR launches official 50th Anniversary ‘Big 50’ bucket list:
50 things to see and do this summer

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) has put together the ultimate heritage railway bucket list for families to tackle this summer featuring a range of activities that best suit you, your friends and family.

In celebration of the heritage railway turning 50, it wants to inspire visitors to get involved and learn about the history of the railway and for families to explore the communities of North Yorkshire it connects! What better way to do this than by the NYMR’s ‘Big 50’ bucket list of things to do, see and explore during a trip to the iconic Yorkshire attraction? Plus every visit helps to keep the NYMR on track for future golden years.

This summer, when you visit the UK’s most loved railway, become a ‘Top Fan’ and earn your very own badge by completing 10 out of 50 of the bucket list items. Better yet, complete all 50 and become a ‘Super Fan’, with its own special badge. The ‘Big 50’ booklet can be collected from any NYMR booking office, and taken to a station shop once completed to claim a Top Fan or Super Fan badge. The NYMR is encouraging participants in this summer challenge to keep their eyes peeled for an online competition featuring a one off super-fan prize as well as runner up prizes.

The bucket list of 50 items marks the 50th Anniversary of the NYMR, Britain’s most popular heritage railway, which welcomes over 300,000 visitors every year. The list aims to encourage visitors to make the most of their journey, and explore the whole of the heritage railway with the Annual Pass Ticket for £49.50. With this ticket, buy 1 day and get twelve months free from the date of your first visit, at no extra cost to you.

Families also benefit because Kids Go Free, meaning any child aged 15 and below travels for free at all times.

Among the 50 items on the checklist are activities like:

  • Visit ‘Hogsmeade’ - aka Goathland Station, which doubled as the train stop for Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone film.
  • Enjoy traditional fish and chips in Whitby.
  • Have a chat with one of the NYMR volunteers - some of them have been with us since the start in 1973 so they have lots of great stories to tell!

There’s plenty to see and do at the NYMR, so to find out more visit nymr.co.uk/big50
