The NYMR is currently hosting a mobile satellite uplink trial co-ordinated by CGI, a multinational information technology consulting and software development company.

They will be running a technical demonstration service between Pickering and Grosmont daily for up to 3 weeks, seeking to test the effectiveness of hardware for next generation mobile communications, and are keen to test this in a railway environment ahead of mainline trials.

The demonstration on how satellite communications networks can deliver improved on-board connectivity for both passenger and train operators is supported by the UK Space Agency, European Space Agency, Icomera and OneWeb. During the pilot a test train, hosting satellite and terrestrial communications equipment, will run on our line to test the level of connectivity achieved using both novel satellite and existing terrestrial mobile (4G) networks. This test train is not open to the public and will not impact the scheduled NYMR services.
