Michelle Baggaley, Community Engagement Manager, gives us a positive update on two recent work experience placements at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Last week we welcomed two students from Archbishop Holgate’s School to complete their YR12 work experience placements. Such opportunities can help students to decide on the right job role in future and gain valuable practical skills that are attractive to prospective employers. Students can learn new skills and gain hands-on experience in a real-world setting.

Joining the NYMR Business Systems department and Permanent Way, both students settled well, gained valuable knowledge, and developed transferable skills to support future careers.

Matthew picked the NYMR as he considered it to be one of the more interesting assignments. He did not really know what to expect but found what we had to offer was varied and interesting. Matthew fitted in well with everyone here and was keen to learn and try out new experiences. It was a pleasure to have him with us for the week. Martyn Cannings, P-Way Supervisor

Zach came to join us in the Business Systems Department for a week as he’d found it difficult to find an IT placement elsewhere. We covered a wide range of tasks including desktop support, network security, programming, data analysis and even found some time to work lineside at Kingthorpe. Zach asked lots of questions and was very keen to learn more about what we do. He hopes to come back and volunteer with Business Systems during the summer, and he will be very welcome!
