The Rail Trail

Travel one way on a shorter rail journey and return on foot with a scenic walk along the Rail Trail between Goathland Station and Grosmont Station. This gentle route follows sections of the old railway line through the Esk Valley, with woodland paths, open countryside and plenty of opportunities to pause and take in the views along the way. A short journey ticket is the perfect way to enjoy both the railway and the landscape at your own pace.

Start your day with a train ride to Goathland before heading off on foot towards Grosmont, or do the route the other way round and enjoy the changing scenery from a different perspective. The walk is ideal for families, casual walkers and anyone looking to combine a heritage railway journey with a relaxing countryside ramble. Don’t forget sturdy footwear, especially after wet weather.

There’s time to make a day of it too. Pause for refreshments at the tea rooms in Goathland Station before setting off, or reward yourself with a well-earned drink and slice of cake when you arrive at Grosmont Station. Whether you choose tea before the walk or after it, it’s a lovely way to round off a day exploring the railway and the North York Moors.
