Diesel Footplate Experience

Experience the workhorses of Britain’s railways with a return journey in a cab of a heritage diesel locomotive. Travel between Grosmont and Pickering (36 miles) with our experienced crews and see Yorkshire’s amazing scenery as you traverse the North York Moors National Park.

  • 36-mile footplate ride on a heritage diesel locomotive (18 miles in each direction between Grosmont and Pickering Stations).
  • A bottle of water to take on the footplate
  • Voucher to use in the tearoom at Grosmont (up to the value of £15)
  • A 10% off voucher to use in our station shops
  • A signed certificate from your driver

The course operates on various Sundays through the year. During the Pink Timetable the service starts at 2:55 pm from Grosmont (return departs Pickering at 4.25 pm) and during the Blue Timetable the service starts at 2:00 pm from Grosmont (return departs Pickering at 3.25 pm).

Please note:

  • If you are a purchasing a Diesel Experience as a gift and do not know the recipients details, please purchase a Gift Voucher for the correct amount so that the participant can complete their personal details.
  • All courses are available for physically fit participants aged 16 years plus.
  • These Diesel Experiences take place on a standard running service. Additional guests must purchase a ticket to travel in the trailing carriages through our Customer Services Team at [email protected]. A reduced-rate ticket is available for one adult companion, while standard fares apply to any further travelling guests.
  • A confidential Medical Questionnaire and Briefing Document must be completed at least 10 days ahead of your booked visit date, details and questionnaire link will be in your Booking Confirmation email.
  • Please ensure that you arrive at Grosmont Station Shop at least 45 minutes before service is due to depart.
