Children in Signal Box

The Signaller’s Challenge Workshop (KS1/2)

The Signaller’s Challenge [KS1 & KS2] 1 hour

Pickering Station, 30 Pupils

Pupils will explore communication across the railway, taking a closer look at the vital role of the signaller - historically known as the “bobby.” They will then be introduced to semaphore signalling, learn how to interpret signal arm positions and crack coded messages, before putting their skills to the test in a cryptography challenge. The session also introduces the fundamentals of computer programming through hands-on use of coding robots, helping pupils understand how clear instructions and sequencing are essential to safe and timely communications. In smaller groups, pupils will visit our demonstration signal box to see these principles in action and discover how signalling technology supports the safe and efficient movement of trains.

The tech toys have been generously loaned to us by Technology In Play, making it possible to deliver this innovative and engaging new aspect to the signaller's activity.
