Update 12 August

We've changed how Pendennis Castle services will operate. Instead of only offering a return journey, you'll now have more options to hop on and hop off throughout the day.

If you've already purchased a seat-allocated service, you'll still have a reserved seat for the return service you've booked, but you'll also be able to hop on and hop off other Standard Services between Pickering and Grosmont on the day.

Pendennis Castle will still run at the planned service times. However, these services are now classified as Standard Services, so standard Day Rover and Short Journey tickets can be used on them.

An updated timetable with Pendennis Castle hauled services shown for each running day will be released shortly. The locomotive may also be hauling other services as required during her visit to the NYMR, please check the Locomotive Roster on the homepage for any periodic use.

We're delighted to be welcoming, No. 4079 Pendennis Castle to the NYMR, courtesy of the Didcot Railway Centre.

Over two weekends, 3, 4, 10 & 11 October, this stunning locomotive will be hauling services, through the spectacular North York Moors National Park.

A genuine racing legend. Built at Swindon Works in February 1924, No. 4079 Pendennis Castle is one of the most celebrated steam locomotives ever built. In 1925 the Great Western lent her to its rival the LNER for trials against the brand new Flying Scotsman, and she outpaced the bigger engine while burning far less coal and water. She was soon billed as the most powerful express passenger locomotive in Britain.

A globetrotter come home

After clocking up more than 1.75 million miles on Britain's main lines, Pendennis Castle was saved for preservation in 1964, then shipped to Western Australia to haul iron ore trains across the outback. She became only the second steam locomotive ever, after Flying Scotsman, to travel right around the world. Restored over many years by dedicated volunteers, she steamed once more in August 2021.
