Visiting Locomotives

We are pleased to announce that the first two visiting locomotives are:

No. 4079 Pendennis Castle

This Castle Class 4-6-0 is a famed locomotive from the Great Western Railway, its build was completed in 1924 and the locomotive gained fame in 1925 by outperforming Flying Scotsman during trials on the East Coast main line. The locomotive was showcased at the British Empire Exhibition before being withdrawn in 1964. In preservation Pendennis Castle travelled to Australia in 1977 before returning to Britain in the summer of 2000, becoming the first 4-6-0 steam locomotive to circumnavigate the globe. Image courtesy Frank Dumbleton.

No. 2253 Omaha

Visiting courtesy of the Dartmouth Steam Railway and Peter Best.

Locomotive No. 2253 was designed by the United States Army Transport Corps, constructed by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1943 and shipped to Britain in May of that year. After the Allied invasion of Europe, it was sent to France in September 1944 and operated throughout Europe. The locomotive was named Omaha in honour of the owner's father, who participated in the D-Day landings. Image courtesy Stu Malcolm.
