LNER Coach Association (LNERCA)
Formed in 1979, the LNER Coach Association has been an integral part of NYMR life since its first fully restored carriage, Gresley-designed Buffet Car No. 641 was completed in 1994. Since then numerous carriages have entered service, offering passengers a chance to ride in rolling stock going back 100 years. The LNERCA, a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), has successfully run an eight-coach LNER train, hauled by a LNER Apple Green locomotive – the ultimate spectacle! Carriages from the Association’s fleet now operate on three heritage railways, NYMR, Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway and the Stainmore Railway at Kirkby Stephen.
The LNERCA is pleased to invite and welcome new members. Many support the Association from home by making donations and some come along to lend a hand at the myriad of activities, ranging from upholstery, joinery, electrical, varnish and paint stripping to painting including varnishing. Many of our volunteers come from the retired generation, eager to keep young, and we have several ladies within our working members. All ages are welcome.
We have our own workshop just outside Pickering and also have access to the NYMR’s Atkins shed in Pickering station yard.
You may have seen our LNER carriages in films and on the television? These have ‘starred’ in ‘Downton Abbey’, ‘Poirot’, ‘Dad’s Army’ and ‘Brideshead Revisited’ to name a few. The Association’s trustees are pleased to have brought both revenue and publicity to the NYMR for these train appearances.
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is the only heritage railway in the UK where the public can ride in a pre-British Rail trainset on a daily basis on a scheduled timetabled train. The LNERCA and NYMR have an Agreement whereby the Coach Association is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of five carriages above the solebar (main frame) whilst the NYMR assumes responsibility for the safety critical items – wheels, brakes, gangways, i.e. below the solebar.
