The Green Knight - Fact File

  • The Green Knight celebrated its 70th birthday in 2024.

  • The name The Green Knight was originally carried by locomotive 73086. Number 75029 was named The Green Knight after 73086 was withdrawn from service in 1967.

  • Only 6 of the 80 examples originally built still exist in preservation. Very few were painted green.

  • The Green Knight featured in the Stockton and Darlington cavalcade in Shildon in August 1975, celebrating 150 years since the birth of the modern railway. The 200th anniversary will be celebrated in 2025.

  • The Green Knight carried the Olympic Torch from Whitby to Grosmont as part of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

  • The Green Knight is one of only a handful of our engines that can haul mainline services to Whitby. Without this engine, there is a real risk to us being able to deliver our timetable to Whitby beyond 2028.
