Below is a list of our most frequently asked questions:

HOW LONG IS THE RAILWAY LINE?

There are 18 miles between Pickering and Grosmont Stations, and a further 6 miles on to the seaside resort of Whitby.

WHAT ARE THE JOURNEY TIMES TO EACH STATION?

The full journey between Pickering and Whitby is over and hour and a half straight though. Pickering to Grosmont takes an hour and ten minutes, and it takes approximately 25 minutes to get to Whitby from Grosmont. Pickering to Levisham takes approximately 20 minutes; Goathland is 50 minutes from Pickering and 15 minutes from Grosmont.

CAN I BOOK TICKETS IN ADVANCE?

Standard tickets should be purchased on the day of travel from any of the Station Booking Offices. Special Event tickets can be purchased in advance through our online shop. Group bookings must be booked and paid for in advance.

HOW DO I MAKE A GROUP BOOKING?

Groups can be allocated reserved seating when booked in advance, and may qualify for a 20% discount. See: http://www.nymr.co.uk/timetables-and-fares/group-travel/ for further details.

CAN I RESERVE SEATS?

Seats can be reserved for groups of 20 or more when booked in advance. Seating in our carriages is not reserved for less than 20 people travelling together. 

CAN I BRING A BICYCLE?

Yes you can! The North York Moors are great for a day out on your pedal cycle. Bicycles can be carried in our Guards Vans if there is enough room for them. Tickets are £2.50 each.

ARE DOGS ALLOWED?

Dogs are welcome on all our trains except Dining trains provided they are kept off the seats. Dog tickets are £2.50 each and have the same validity as the owner’s ticket.

WHERE WAS HEARTBEAT FILMED?

Heartbeat was filmed in and around the North York Moors, and in Whitby. The village of Goathland is also known as ITVs Aidensfield, and Goathland Station and several sections of the railway line feature in many episodes.

WHERE CAN I GET REFRESHMENTS?

There are NYMR Tea Rooms at Pickering, Goathland and Grosmont Stations, and a Tea Hut at Levisham which is open on weekends. There is a Trolley service providing hot drinks and snacks on most trains. See: http://www.nymr.co.uk/food-and-drink/tea-rooms/

WHERE CAN I PARK MY CAR?

Parking is available at all our stations except Newtondale Halt. Early arrival is recommended at Pickering due to limited space, although we now have an overspill car park at Trout Farm – signposted from the main car park. Parking is Pay and Display.

WHAT ARE THE DISABLED FACILITIES AT EACH STATION?

Pickering, Goathland and Grosmont stations provide accessible toilets for the disabled. We are able to take wheelchairs on our trains, with access directly into the Guards Van via a ramp. When trains are in or approaching Goathland it is only possible to change platforms via the footbridge. Please allow ten minutes before the train is due to depart if you need to get to the platform for Levisham and Pickering trains. See: http://www.nymr.co.uk/planning-your-visit/accessibility/

ARE THERE BABY CHANGING FACILITIES?

There are places to change your baby at Pickering, Goathland and Grosmont Stations.

CAN I TRAVEL 1ST CLASS?

First Class Service is available on some trains, at a supplement of £3.50 per person per single journey – this is payable to the guard or ticket inspector.
