Annual War Weekend - Bringing in the big guns

This week with one of the biggest events of the year – War Weekend – the pressure is on for the NYMR to find something new to spice it up. The event, a weekend where the whole railway is transformed into a nostalgic snapshot of wartime Britain, is hugely popular with steam enthusiasts, war re-enactors & those who just like to dress up coming from all over the world. But now in its 27th year the railway wants to find a new attraction. Coming towards the end of the railway’s season the event is vital to bring in enough money to see it through the quiet winter months.

They find a huge Second World War artillery gun but getting the monster gun to the railway proves a mission in itself. There’s rivalry between Kieran and marketing boss Laura as to who can have the most war-time thrills. They aim to fire the gun mid event. With packed platforms what could possibly go wrong?

Elsewhere, the old warhorse S160 Omaha engine gives loco boss Piglet yet more grief. The engine has been plagued with problems all season but – being an engine actually involved in the Day Day landings – it’s perfect for an event that prides itself on the history of a railway in wartime.

With a combination of donations and grants the Charity has raised over 90% of the funds to deliver its YMJ project. The heritage railway still needs to raise an additional £800k over the next three years and is appealing for further support to achieve that target.
