Booking Office Clerk

Often the first point of contact for our visitors and an integral part of the whole visitor experience, you’ll inform our visitors of the ticketing options available to them, take both cash and card payments, and encourage our visitors to Gift Aid their purchases. Download Role Profile

Education & Community Engagement

The NYMR is a heritage railway and living museum which remains highly relevant to our lives today and for the future. Education & Community Engagement volunteers support a wide range of learning activities for all ages, both on and off site. Download Role Profile


The role of Guard is a highly responsible one, having overall management of the train as well as co-ordinating the on-board team. You’ll be responsible for the safety of our passengers and crew and take control should an emergency situation arise, with the support of NYMR Signallers and Control. Download Role Profile

Guide Book Seller

You will begin your day by collecting Guide Books and a cash float from Pickering or Grosmont Station Shop. You’ll then head out onto the trains where you’ll spend your day selling books and talking to passengers. At the end of the day, you’ll return to your starting point and count up your sales and cash takings. Download Role Profile

Onboard Catering Steward

We operate a vital buffet service for those travelling on our trains. In this role you will interact and engage with our passengers offering core refreshments. You’ll be integral in delivering a great product in a unique environment by providing excellent customer service in a pleasant and friendly way. Download Role Profile

Pullman Steward

Our Pullman Stewards provide an excellent and friendly service to our dining passengers on our historic Pullman carriages. It’s a fast paced and unique hospitality environment, where you’ll be working as part of a team helping to deliver a premium product. Download Role Profile

Shop Assistant

You’ll be an integral part of the whole visitor experience, helping to deal with any enquiries in a pleasant and friendly way. As Shop Assistant you will serve customers, provide excellent customer service and help drive sales, all in a unique environment. Download Role Profile

Station Foreman

As Station Foreman you’d be an essential link with our passengers providing a warm and friendly welcome to our passengers. This role is responsible for the safe working of the platforms under their control and has safety critical elements involving train despatch. Download Role Profile

Station Staff

Station staff assist our visitors with boarding and alighting from our services, and by providing information. Reporting to the Station Foreman and liaising with other staff, volunteers, and departments, you will ensure that the station areas are safe and tidy. Download Role Profile

Tea Room Assistant

In this role, you’ll help to prepare food and drinks, serve our visitors, deal with enquiries, and undertake other necessary tasks to help deliver an exceptional service. You’ll work as part of a team providing excellent customer service and be integral to the whole visitor experience. Download Role Profile

Train Guide

In our unique environment, you’ll inform our visitors as they travel along the line. You will be expected to develop a broad knowledge, from the history of the NYMR to the flora and fauna they may see along the way. This is an active role, where you will be on train engaging with our visitors for the most of your turn. Download Role Profile

Travelling Ticket Inspector (TTI)

The role of the TTI is to ensure that all passengers are in possession of relevant tickets for their journey. You will be the main contact point on the train and a key expectation is to the ability to engage with our visitors in a friendly and professional manner. Welcome Host

You’ll often the first point of contact for our visitors. You’ll meet and greet our visitors and help to answer any enquiries in a pleasant and friendly way. You’ll assist our visitors with the self-service ticket machines, give directions, and help ensure their visit is memorable. Download Role Profile

Behind the Scenes Roles

For those who prefer the magic of behind-the-scenes work, we have a variety of crucial roles that keep our railway running smoothly. From maintaining and restoring our heritage locomotives, track and lineside structures, to ensuring the continued operation of our signalling & telecommunication equipment, your efforts will ensure the seamless operation of our very special heritage railway. The Archive team develop the policies and procedures for the management of the collection and also care for the materials and artefacts, from photographs to drawings and small artefacts which are kept in the Archive store. Download Role Profile

Carriage & Wagon Fitter

Your role is one where you will learn a great deal of new skills in a unique environment. You’ll be part of a dedicated team repairing and maintaining the NYMR fleet of heritage coaches and other rolling stock. Tasks include internal refits, body repairs and bogie and brake overhauls. Footplate Crew

You’ll begin your journey as Cleaner, an important step on the road to potentially becoming a driver. It is the Cleaner’s responsibility to undertake several duties, while learning the skills and gaining the experience to step into the safety critical roles of fireman, and eventually driver. Junior Volunteer Supervisor

The NYMR has a highly successful Junior Volunteer (JV) Group, as JV Supervisor you'll assist with the organisation and supervision of activities to ensure a worthwhile, enjoyable, and safe experience for all. Lineside Conservation

This role is to help manage our incredible living lineside helping keep the railway safe and vibrant. Tasks are varied with some seasonal and some ongoing. You’ll need to enjoy working as part of a team, be practically-minded, and happy to be outdoors in all weathers. Download Role Profile

Motive Power Depot

In this role you will be part of a dedicated team repairing and maintaining the fleet of heritage locomotives, both steam and diesel, along with other NYMR rolling stock. This is an enjoyable but challenging role where you will have the opportunity to learn many new skills. Download Role Profile

Permanent Way

Your role will encompass a broad range of duties and responsibilities working within a small team to maintain track and lineside structures. The department has a large well-equipped depot, and the role requires a reasonable level of fitness. Download Role Profile

Signalling & Telecommunications (S&T)

We have a range of signals, both mechanical and electrical, that we use to control our trains. We also have a complicated network of cables, levers, rods and other items to ensure the right signal operates and interlocks at the right time, all installed and maintained by our S&T team. Download Role Profile


Our Signallers operate the signals and points to enable our trains to run safely and on time. It is a highly responsible role, and you will need to maintain safety standards at all times, not only when services are running normally but when there is disruption too. Download Role Profile

Station Volunteer

Each of the main stations on the NYMR, themed to a specific era, has support from a group of volunteers. This role involves gardening, general maintenance, repair, restoration, and the development of our stations, ensuring heritage is recognised and respected. Download Role Profile
