Let your pupils explore the impact of the 1965 closure of the Whitby to Pickering railway on school children living in the North Yorkshire Moors. Using 1965 newspaper reports and photographs as stimulus, students will imagine what it was like to be those children and write their own protest letters to Dr. Beeching using persuasive writing techniques.

Example journey: Whitby - Pickering, Single. Dept 10:00 (W) / Arv 11:40 (P). Free educational activity when booking journey. Shorter routes are available.

The children were spellbound when the Education Officer was presenting the story of Beeching’s cuts. They were completely drawn into the situation and as a result were determined to write some very persuasive letters in order to alter Beeching’s plans!
