The North Yorkshire Moors Railway operates trains over 18 miles of its own line and an additional 6 miles on the mainline to the seaside town of Whitby. It is a charity and its purpose it to educate the public about the history of the line and to manage, maintain and develop its historic objects (such as heritage locomotives, carriages, archives). Over 1000 volunteers support the continued delivery of the aims and objectives of the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust working with a core paid staff of over 100.

As a result of the successful bid to the National Heritage Lottery Fund we offer this post as part of ensuring a sustainable future for the NYMR, as part of the Yorkshire's Magnificent Journey appeal. Therefore we are seeking to recruit an experienced Volunteer Development Manager on a fixed term, full time contract, initially for a period of 3 years which will be reviewed in line with the progression of the overall project duration of 5 years, to review and develop a new volunteering strategy and infrastructure. The combination of paid staff and volunteers seek to deliver the core elements of the railway but continued increases in salaried posts is not sustainable. This project is aimed at looking to develop volunteering for the future to ensure there will be sufficient volunteers to meet the needs.

The Volunteer Development Manager will be requested to examine current systems, contacts and processes. They will work with the NYMR management team, external companies and individuals to seek to develop volunteering and ensure it is sustainable for the future.

A wide range of tasks are required of the post holder, includes the following:

  • Review and develop a new volunteering strategy and infrastructure to deliver long term sustainability for the railway
  • Expand the team managing the volunteering system with the addition of new volunteers to support the Volunteer Liaison Officer
  • Develop a database to support management of volunteer systems
  • Improve the working relationship with the NYMR management through a framework of policy, procedure and communication to identify the skills and expertise required to support NYMR needs and match skills to tasks
  • Carry out a survey of volunteering at the railway, including existing volunteers and non-volunteers to identify:
    • Factors affecting turnover/loss of volunteers
    • Motivations for volunteers
    • Barriers to volunteering

This role is based on working 36.5 hours per week and whilst the post is expected to have a base in Pickering, much of the work will require travel to meet people across the railway and particularly making contact and developing relationships with individuals, companies and organisations elsewhere. In order to ensure contact with all relevant individuals and agencies, the post holder would be expected to be able to work flexibly (e.g. some weekend and evening duty).
