The North Yorkshire Moors Railway operates trains over 18 miles of its own line and an additional 6 miles on the mainline to the seaside town of Whitby. It is a charity and its purpose it to educate the public about the history of the line and to manage, maintain and develop its historic objects (such as heritage locomotives, carriages, archives). Over 1000 volunteers support the continued delivery of the aims and objectives of the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust working with a core paid staff of over 100.

This position will report to the Traction and Rolling Stock Manager.

A wide range of tasks are required of the post holder, including the following:

  • To maintain a running fleet of Steam and diesel locomotives capable of meeting the needs of the operating department.
  • To carry out heavy overhauls on Steam and Diesel locomotives that are out of traffic to return them to operational condition.
  • To complete running repairs to Steam and Diesel locomotives.
  • To overhaul heritage traction to network rail standards.
  • To Machine components for Steam and diesel Locomotives.
  • To perform shunting operations if required.
  • Work on other vehicles as required working with Motive Power Team.

The Traction and Rolling Stock department restores and maintains a fleet of heritage vehicles for use on the NYMR.

The role of the machinist will be to help repair, overhaul and make new components for our heritage rolling stock. This will include such items as pins and bushes, machining valves and screw cutting shafts and bores. This is in a variety of materials including steel, cast iron and bronze.

The person in this role needs to be competent in working in imperial measurements, able to read drawings and be able to solve engineering problems. A knowledge of steam traction is preferred.

The position is a permanent contract based on 36.5 hours per week. A flexible approach to working hours is required as some weekend work will be necessary. You will also need a full driving licence as although based in Grosmont, you may also be required to work at other locations on our railway in line with business requirements.
