Seasonal Tearoom Assistants

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway operates trains over 18 miles of its own line and an additional 6 miles on the mainline to the seaside town of Whitby. It is a charity and its purpose it to educate the public about the history of the line and to manage, maintain and develop its historic objects (such as heritage locomotives, carriages, archives). Over 1000 volunteers support the continued delivery of the aims and objectives of the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust working with a core paid staff of over 100.

We are currently recruiting seasonal staff for our 2020 season. Various shifts are available at various locations to include weekends. We are looking for both full/part time seasonal staff members and relief staff.

The requirements of the role are as follows:

  • To assist in all aspects of food preparation and service to visitors and working members on the NYMR in a friendly, professional and profitable manner.
  • To maintain the cleanliness of the premises, to clear & wipe tables and keep the tearoom clean and well stocked. Operating the dishwasher and hand washing pots where necessary.
  • To assist the supervisor with deliveries, stock control & ordering when necessary.
  • To Follow all procedures outlined in the tearoom handbook & SFBB file, ensuring good food hygiene practices are adhered to at all times, ensuring the tearoom retains its level 5 food standard rating.

The locations:

  • Pickering Tearoom- a newly refurbished licenced tearoom situated on the platform, offering a range of prepared in house, pre-packaged, savoury items, quality beverages and sweet treats. Fast paced counter service with a smile.
  • Goathland Tearoom- a unique stone-built building, located within this picturesque station, famous for Heartbeat & Harry Potter. Counter service offering a range of sandwiches & savouries, hot and cold beverages, cakes and ice cream. This tearoom is often run by 1 member of staff so requires someone who is confident working on their own & capable of multi-tasking.
  • Grosmont Tearoom- a busy tearoom with outside seating offering a range of products including breakfast, plated meals & home baking, along with the usual sandwiches, cakes and ice cream. Frequented by staff from the engine sheds & customers alike offering counter service.  

The Hours:

  • Pickering Tearoom- Various shifts available to include weekends, we are looking for both full/part time seasonal staff members and relief staff.
  • Goathland Tearoom- One person primarily to cover the supervisor’s days off, based on 2 shifts per week but also providing holiday cover & support over special events, shifts are usually 9am -5.15pm. We are also looking for staff to cover the busier lunch period & staff breaks for approx. 4 hours per day.
  • Grosmont Tearoom- Various shifts available to include weekends, we are looking for both full/part time seasonal staff members and relief staff.

Please state on your application which tearoom you would prefer to be based from, noting from time to time you may be required to work at other locations if needed.

The Salary: In line with National Living Wage.

You’ll need to have:

  • Experience of working in a fast-paced customer facing role with excellent customer service skills.
  • Experienced in working within a catering/kitchen environment is preferable.
  • A level 2 food hygiene certificate, or willing to work towards.
  • Flexible approach to work & hours, weekends and bank holidays are standard working days.
  • The ability to work as part of a team & on your own following the direction of the tearoom supervisor.
  • You will have to be available to work the gold timetable (school holidays) and special events.
  • Access to transport due to the locations.
