The North Yorkshire Moors Railway operates trains over 18 miles of its own line and an additional 6 miles on the mainline to the seaside town of Whitby. It is a charity and its purpose it to educate the public about the history of the line and to manage, maintain and develop its historic objects (such as heritage locomotives, carriages, archives). Over 1000 volunteers support the continued delivery of the aims and objectives of the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust working with a core paid staff of over 100.

Join our team where you will be working under the direction of the Permanent Way Supervisor based at New Bridge Depot, Pickering. Working in a team repairing and maintaining the small plant, the on-track plant and other equipment and machinery used by the Permanent Way Department.

A wide range of tasks are required of the post holder, including the following:

  • To lead a small team of volunteers and staff in maintaining the various plant and equipment used to support the running of the railway
  • To overhaul, repair and maintain all the allocated plant and equipment normally based a New Bridge Depot to ensure they are fit and safe to use. The items range from small plant such as impact wrenches, construction plant, including a 360 excavator, and fork lift to the on-track tampers and rail cranes which can work all over the NYMR
  • To overhaul items of equipment, including mechanical and fluid power systems to the latest standards where possible
  • To undertake fault finding on items of engineering equipment and where required provide a report with recommendations for overhaul or replacement
  • To conduct inspections of all plant allocated to New Bridge, including when located elsewhere, and provide records
  • To carry out inspections and checks on all lifting equipment, harnesses etc. including liaising with the Insurer’s representative

The position is a permanent contract based on 36.5 hours per week. A flexible approach to working hours is required as some weekend work will be necessary. You will also need a full driving licence as although based in Pickering, you may also be required to work at other locations on our railway.
