Tearoom Catering Assistant - Permanent

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway operates trains over 18 miles of its own line and an additional 6 miles on the mainline to the seaside town of Whitby. It is a charity and its purpose it to educate the public about the history of the line and to manage, maintain and develop its historic objects (such as heritage locomotives, carriages, archives). Over 1000 volunteers support the continued delivery of the aims and objectives of the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust working with a core paid staff of over 100.

We are currently recruiting a permanent catering assistant for Grosmont Tearoom, reporting to the tearoom supervisor. We are looking for a candidate with experience in food preparation and service, who is flexible with working hours and thrives in a busy environment and will be able to cover in the supervisor’s absence.

The requirements of the role are as follows:

Along with all normal tearoom duties you’ll be required to:

  • Cover the supervisor’s days off
  • Open up and close down the tearoom, including cashing up.
  • Preparation and service of food and beverages to visitors and working members on the NYMR in a friendly, professional and profitable manner.
  • To maintain the cleanliness of the premises, to clear & wipe tables and keep the tearoom clean and well stocked. Operating the dishwasher and hand washing pots where necessary
  • To assist the supervisor with deliveries, stock control & ordering when necessary
  • To Follow all procedures outlined in the tearoom handbook & SFBB file, ensuring good food hygiene practices are adhered to at all times, ensuring the tearoom retains its level 5 food standard rating.

The location:

  • Grosmont Tearoom - a busy tearoom with outside seating offering a range of products including cooked breakfasts, plated meals & home baking, along with the usual sandwiches, cakes and ice cream. Frequented by staff from the engine sheds & customers alike, offering counter service.  

The Hours:

  • The permanent Tearoom Assistant position is based on 1664 annualised hours.
  • These hours will be mainly worked during the main operating season (March – early November), usually 5 days over 7.
  • Additional hours will be worked during the winter months which include, but are not limited to, when the trains are running.
  • Weekends and Bank holidays are standard working days.
  • You will not be able to take annual leave during the main operating season to allow the time off when not operating.

The Salary: £14510.08 based on 1664 annualised hours

Who we are looking for:

You’ll need to have:

  • Excellent customer service skills with experience in a customer facing role.
  • Experience in a professional catering/kitchen operation.
  • A sound knowledge of food preparation and service.
  • A level 2 food hygiene certificate.
  • Flexible approach to work & hours as weekends and bank holidays are standard working days.
  • The ability to work as part of a team & on your own following the direction of the tearoom supervisor.
  • Transport due to the location

The position is a based on 1664 annualised hours. A flexible approach to working hours is required as weekend work will be necessary. You will also need a full driving licence as although based in Grosmont you may also be required to work at other locations on our railway.
