The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is a major heritage charity and accredited working museum and claimed to be the busiest steam heritage railway in the world, carrying passengers each year between Pickering and Whitby through the North York Moors National Park.

The business is managed on a day to day basis by a team of around 500 volunteers supported by approximately 120 employees led by a General Manager and his Senior Management Team.

Until now the HR function has been organised through a team of volunteers, with previous HR experience, but due to the progression of the business it is recognised that there now needs to be an appointment made of an employed HR professional to lead the function.

The Head of HR role will sit within the membership of the Senior Management Team reporting directly to the General Manager. They will be responsible for developing and implementing, with managers, the HR and people strategy, supporting managers with regard to ER casework, ensuring compliance with HR processes, including policies and procedures. In addition the Head of HR will coordinate performance management standards and development training needs.

This is an exciting new position for a person who has a generalist HR background and can contribute to a solutions focused senior team. There is also the opportunity to design and develop the HR function from the ground upwards.

This appointment will be made initially on a basis of working 20 hours a week which will be on a flexible basis according to the business requirements of the role and the individual post holder’s own requirements.

It is expected that the person appointed will be at least Level 5 CIPD qualified or can demonstrate good all-round experience working at a senior HR level.

Salary dependent on experience and qualifications, initially part time, 20 hours per week.
