£13,728 per annum if aged 18 or over

Part time 22 hours per week working 5 am until 10.30am over 4 days.

Yes... Then this could be the job for you!

Raising a fire in a steam locomotive in the morning is an important and safety critical role that takes skill, time and patience. During the operating season you will examine and light steam locomotives that are required for service that day. Outside of the operating season your work will include assisting fitters, carrying out annual exams on steam engines, some ashpan and smokebox repairs.

Main Accountabilities;

  • Carry out a preparatory visual examination of firebox and ensure adequate water levels prior to lighting up.
  • Work alongside volunteers to prepare locomotives for traffic.
  • Establish a sustainable fire to hand over to engine crews.
  • Take boiler water samples for analysis.
  • Assist Fitness to Run (FTR) fitter with locomotive repairs.
  • Liaise with diesel locomotive crews for loco dispatch.
  • Dispose of ash as required.
  • Manage lighting up materials and locomotive consumables.
  • Depot house keeping.
  • Assist fitters with locomotive maintenance.

Hours of Work;

Work patterns can be discussed at interview but must include 1 weekend day and working either 7 am until 3 pm or 9 am until 5 pm outside of the operating season. The main operating season is usually from Easter – March/April to end of October and most of December.
