Seasonal Carriage / Premises Cleaners

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway operates trains over 18 miles of its own line and an additional 6 miles on the mainline to the seaside town of Whitby. It is a charity and its purpose it to educate the public about the history of the line and to manage, maintain and develop its historic objects (such as heritage locomotives, carriages, archives). Over 1000 volunteers support the continued delivery of the aims and objectives of the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust working with a core paid staff of over 100.

We are currently recruiting seasonal Carriage / Premises Cleaners within our Cleaning Department, reporting to the Cleaning Supervisor you will be cleaning the interior and exterior or trains as well as specified station areas and holiday accommodations.

Shifts are available at 2 locations, Pickering & Grosmont, to include weekends.

The requirements of the role are as follows:

  • To ensure the interior and exterior of carriages are kept clean and tidy, and to ensure carriages get watered up.
  • To ensure carriages are drained of water on an evening during colder weather to avoid freezing. 
  • Sweeping, mopping and vacuuming as appropriate, all carriage floors and cleaning carriage interiors and glass. Wiping tables and brushing seats. Dusting all other surfaces. Restock carriage toilets with consumables and ensure the facilities are clean and tidy.
  • Responsible for washing the outside of carriages.
  • Sweeping of platforms and waiting areas.
  • Empty platform bins.
  • Servicing of coaches including watering up and re-gassing and charging following appropriate training.
  • Communicating in a professional manner with customers and other visitors as these are customer facing positions.
  • Pre-season deep cleaning upholstery.
  • End of season deep cleaning including the Pullman dining train, buffet cars and saloons.
  • Cleaning the platform toilets and completing the necessary sign off paperwork to ensure standards are met.
  • To assist in all aspects of service to visitors and working members on the NYMR in a friendly and professional manner.
  • To ensure the cleaners store is kept tidy at all times.
  • To ensure cleaning products are used correctly and kept in a safe environment.

The Locations:

  • One Pickering based Cleaner and one Grosmont based Cleaner. You may on occasions be required to work from other NYMR locations. Applicants are requested to state in application which location would be preferred as the main base.

The Hours:

  • The Carriage / Premises Cleaner posts are seasonal
  • Working split shifts to include weekends and bank holidays
  • Annual leave is restricted during the main operating season and must be authorised and approved by the Cleaning Supervisor

The Salary: in line with National Living Wage

Contract: Seasonal
