The North Yorkshire Moors Railway operates trains over 18 miles of its own line and an additional 6 miles on the mainline to the seaside town of Whitby. It is one of the busiest visitor attractions in Yorkshire and with 300,000 passengers each year it carries more people than any other heritage steam railway. It is a charity and its purpose is to educate the public about the history of the line and to manage, maintain and develop its historic objects (such as heritage locomotives, carriages, archives). Over 1000 volunteers support the continued delivery of the aims and objectives of the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust working with an establishment of over 100 paid employees.

We are currently looking for a seasonal Shop Assistant to cover approx. 3 shifts per week. This post is to cover turns at both Grosmont Station Shop and the Shed Shop. You may also be required to cover turns at Goathland Station Shop.

Grosmont Station Shop – situated within the original Station Masters House on the station.

Shed Shop – within the engine sheds.

We offer a range of gifts and souvenirs for passengers and railway enthusiasts. These shops are run by 1 member of staff so someone who is confident working on their own & capable of multi-tasking is required.

The requirements of the roles are as follows:

  • To provide excellent customer service to visitors on the NYMR in a friendly, professional and profitable manner.
  • To maintain the cleanliness of the premises, keeping the shop clean and well stocked.
  • To handle sales, including membership and gift vouchers and follow the procedures for cashing up and banking.
  • To assist with the maintenance of stock levels, unpacking deliveries and merchandising.

The Salary: In line with the Real Living Wage.

Who we are looking for:

  • Someone with excellent customer service skills with experience in a customer facing / retail role.
  • Flexible approach to work & hours - weekends and bank holidays are standard working days.
  • Experience in cash/payment handling and cashing up, although full training will be provided.

The position is a part-time seasonal contract with hours that vary. A flexible approach to working hours is required as weekend work will be necessary. You will also need a full driving licence as although based in Grosmont you may also be required to work at other locations on our railway.
