The North Yorkshire Moors Railway operates trains over 18 miles of its own line and an additional 6 miles on the mainline to the seaside town of Whitby. It is a charity and its purpose is to educate the public about the history of the line and to manage, maintain and develop its historic assets (such as heritage locomotives, carriages, structures, buildings and archives). Over 1000 volunteers support the continued delivery of the aims and objectives of the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust working with an establishment of over 100 paid employees.

The Traction & Rolling Stock department is responsible for the safe delivery of steam and diesel locomotives, carriages and wagons. Reporting to the MPD Managers, the main task of the Fire Raiser is to examine and light steam locomotives required for service from New Bridge MPD. The person will need to be competent in the lighting of locomotives and their operation.

A wide range of tasks are required of the post holder, including the following:

  • Carry out a preparatory visual examination of firebox and ensure adequate water levels prior to lighting up.
  • Establish a sustainable fire to hand over to engine crew.
  • Take boiler water samples for analysis against pre-determined water quality standards.
  • Record analysis results.
  • Blow down boilers as required.
  • Assist FTR fitter with locomotive repairs.
  • Dispose of ash as required.
  • Manage lighting up materials and locomotive consumables.

The position is a seasonal contract based on 22 hours per week. Weekend work will be necessary. You will also need a full driving licence as although based in New Bridge, you may also be required to work at other locations on our railway.
