Railway in Wartime 2019

11, 12 & 13 October 2019

Over the three-day event families can hop on board steam and heritage diesel trains and relive the amazing spirit and camaraderie of World War II, whilst enjoying various war-themed entertainment and vehicle displays at stations along the iconic North Yorkshire Moors Railway line.

Each station will be transformed to create a variety of scenarios and performances including a wartime street, ‘The Sidings’, at Pickering, Home Guard demonstrations at Goathland and Grosmont will be taken over by Eden Camp. Levisham will once again have a variety of living history displays. 

Railway in Wartime is an extremely popular event. Please visit our Frequently Asked Questions in advance of your visit. 

New for 2019: 

* Pickering: D-Day Exhibition: A visual display of the first 24 hours on the D-Day beaches. 

* Levisham: Come and experience our interactive show 'Other Side of the Tracks' which will take you back to Hull, 1941 and the evacuation of school girl, June and her adventures in the East Yorkshire Countryside. 

* Grosmont: Experience this War Weekend as Eden Camp takes-over Grosmont Station with authentic fairground rides, military vehicles, vintage sweet shop and children's games. 

Travel along the heritage line (Pickering to Grosmont returns) Adult/Concession £27.00, Child £13.50 and Family (2x Adults & 2x Children) £56.00 Multi-Day Tickets (1 day, 2 day and 3 day ticket options available). Carer Tickets are available with a full paying fare. Proof of ID required at Booking Office.

Event Parking & Road Closures

Station car parks at Pickering, Levisham, Goathland & Grosmont will be closed for non-registered vehicles during the whole of the Railway in Wartime event. Alternative parking is available at Pickering (Official Park & Ride: Cedar Barn, Disabled Parking: Vivis Lane), Goathland Village Car Park and Grosmont Village Car Park. More Information

Covid-19 Mitigations


We have received Visit England’s ‘We’re Good to Go’ accreditation to ensure that we are Covid-19 secure. These measures include:


✔  Travel in groups of a max of 6. #Ruleof6
✔  We've an enhanced cleaning regime between services.
✔  We Zoono ‘fog’ our carriages and all public areas.
✔  We ask that everyone wears a face covering whilst moving around the railway.
✔  We’ve reduced capacity on board our trains.
