Astounding Inventions: Signal Box Demonstrations: Saturday 10th September & Saturday 17th September

Join us in celebrating England's rich history of invention, industry and innovation with Heritage Open Days 'Astounding Inventions' theme. Where would we be without steam trains? 

Visit our demonstration signal box on Platform 2 on Pickering Station and learn about the history of railway communication and signalling. Our education volunteers will be on hand to show you how the signal box works, and you can even have a go at operating signal levers.

Yorkshire's Magnificent Journey Project

The £10 million YMJ project aims to secure the long-term future of the popular heritage railway. It involves much-needed infrastructure improvements to enable the line to continue running for generations to come, including the replacement of three bridges. The project also focuses on improving access to the railway by those with disabilities, action to conserve and interpret the heritage, flora and fauna along the lineside, providing new opportunities for apprentices and new education and volunteering facilities. For further information and to donate please visit
