Last week you may recall I said the signal leading out of Beck Siding at Pickering was no longer there, as neither is the turnout connecting into the siding!  Originally Beck Siding was used to stable a coach that could be quickly added to a train if there was an unexpected last minute rush of passengers.

But with the use now of more or less fixed sets of coaches due to Whitby running, the siding has only been used in recent times to stable out of use vehicles.  As the turnout was life expired the Trust Board agreed to its removal, which has now been done as seen in photos A and B.  This is only a temporary bit of track as when we renew 5 Pts later in the year, we will dig out the poor formation here and relay in matching good track.  To avoid unnecessary work , our S&T have done some clever things to let our signalling system think the turnout is still there but cannot be used.  Again when the grand resignalling of Pickering is done, they will do a permanent alteration.

 

At Goathland, the new shop is coming on leaps and bounds, well not too literally!  The outside is seen in C and with opening planned for next week only the final painting and fitting out are now required.  In photo D, taken without a wide angle, part of the display is seen in E with Mr Bruce standing in the way as ever.  I don’t want to be too nice to him after all these years of trading insults!

 

We had a third ballast train from DB Cargo with stone being tipped at Sadler House and also near Carter House ready for maintenance tamping.  The balance was tipped on the relay near Yorfalls level crossing to provide the necessary ballast shoulder as this section is now Continuous Welded Rail or CWR.  A shoulder is required to help hold the track in position in CWR when the weather gets hot as it will hopefully before too long.  This shoulder can be seen in photos F and G.

 

Further towards Goathland the Wombles have been rebuilding the collapsed retaining wall that supports the railway where close to Pickering Beck. Simon and Neal can be seen looking out into the river in H, but I don’t know what they were looking for, or whether indeed they saw it! 

 

When the original 1835 single line railway was built we don’t know exactly where the track was nor do know where the second track was when the doubling was done in the 1840’s, being before my time. In this area the river is paved in big stones and we have always assumed the second track was laid nearer to the river, but we didn’t really know.  Now as you can see in photo I, one of the big stones the wall is built with is an original 1835 stone sleeper block complete with very rusty cast iron chair which confirms the second track was laid on the river side of the original.  Rebuilding this wall will take some years so more news as it progresses.

 

Further down towards Yorfalls more Wombles can be seen cutting back the ever growing vegetation as seen in J and K.

The short relay at New Bridge is progressing with the new track now through the Occupation level crossing.  There has always been a lot of dirty stuff coming off the main road with lorries from the quarry.  Doubt the drain pipe we dug up and seen in L  has carried much water for a while!  The spoil at the crossing was dug out by Peter and taken away by two local farmers as seen in  M.  The new panel of track was then laid and the Rosehill  panels fitted yesterday afternoon as seen in N and O.   The rest of the track is being relaid today and will then be ballasted and tamped ready for rail welding next week, with all being ready for Royal Scot to glide over it.
