Following the success in obtaining Stage One Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) approval, work has continued to develop the project. A massive effort is now required over the next few months to deliver vital plans to complete the application, hopefully securing the full lottery grant. 

The aim is that the final bid will be submitted in late summer - with a hopeful outcome that we will receive permission to start work early in 2019. To prepare the submission and to make sure we cover every aspect that the HLF require, here is a brief overview of the current activities:

Project Champions are developing detailed proposals and costs for the individual project. This includes full design works and plans to ensure we clearly layout our aims and how they will contribute to the sustainability of the Railway and the positive impact for people.

We have noted to the HLF the advantage of merging two of the initial bid elements, the Apprenticeship Scheme and the Railways Lineside Management project meaning we now have seven projects instead of eight. The decision to merge the projects mean a clear delivery plan will be linked to the Countryside Apprenticeship Scheme, planned as a joint NYMR/North York Moors National Park Authority Scheme. There will also be some traditional workshop apprenticeship opportunities. 

A part-time Project Director, Jim Boothroyd has been appointed to support and mentor the Railway through the Round Two development process. Jim is experienced in successfully delivering Lottery Bids. 

The Railways Trust Board has ultimate responsibility for the project, delivered through an Executive Group. This group meets fortnightly and works closely with the Project Champions and their teams. Consultants have been providing professional support with the individual project teams to ensure the plans and costings are ready to submit as part of the application process. This process is nearly complete. 

Project Updates:

1. Renewal and Repair of the Bridges: Currently condition studies and options are being investigated to identify the works vitally needed with the the best value solutions possible.  
2. Fuss-Free Access: This project will provide a much better quality experience for those with pushchairs and mobility needs. The specific carriages to be adapted have now been identified. 
3. Carriage Care Facility: During February planning permission was granted by Ryedale Council. Work continues in investigating local ground conditions and assessing the type of the foundations that will be required. The Trust Board have approved a Carriage Security Policy. 
4. Education Carriage: A suitable carriage has been identified and work is already being undertaken with experienced external companies. 
5. Volunteer Accommodation: The original plan to site this at Grosmont has proved not to be ideal and other options are being explored. 
6. Apprenticeship and Line Side Programme: Positive meetings have been held with potential training agencies and the North York Moors National Park Authority. The plans for lineside works and care will be a key focus for the countryside apprentices. 
7. Volunteer Development: The plan is to create a post to explore and develop volunteering for the future.
