The Big One! The Railway in Wartime event is our most popular weekend of the year, with over 30,000 people descending on Pickering and along the line for an extravaganza of entertainments, re-enactments and much more. Visitors and exhibitors alike dress in wartime fashions and uniforms, from child evacuees to American Paratroopers.

Each station has something unique – Pickering is home base with an array of traders and vehicle displays as well as parades through the town and a general festive atmosphere; “Le Visham” becomes German-occupied France for the duration; Goathland a base for “Dad’s Army” – the Home Guard; while Grosmont will be overrun with Brylcreem Boys as it becomes an RAF base.

Now in its 24th year the Railway in Wartime event generates amazing footfall over the course of the 3 day event producing excellent coverage through television and radio plus local, regional and national press, where better than to advertise your company name?

Every year the Railway in Wartime event generates an extra £1 million into Pickering and Ryedale’s economy, with visitors travelling from across the UK and around the world to attend this event.
