LNER Coach Association (LNERCA)

The initials LNER stand for London and North Eastern Railway. This was the railway company that ran the current East Coast Main Line and its many secondary lines until 1948, when the country’s railway system was nationalised and became British Railways.

The LNER Coach Association (LNERCA) was formed in 1980 with the objectives of obtaining, restoring and operating a collection of ex-LNER and or constituent companies’ vehicles. It also provides an umbrella organisation for members with privately owned LNER and or constituent companies vehicles for use on the NYMR. LNERCA now has 22 heritage vehicles either owned by the Association or under its wing. The Thompson B1 Locomotive ex-LNER class B1 4-6-0 no. 61264

Following her rescue from the scrapyard in 1976, the B1 returned to steam in 1997 after a 20-year restoration.

Over the next decade she clocked up many thousands of miles in revenue-earning service, operating on both heritage railways and the UK main line.

Withdrawn in 2008 for a heavy general overhaul, almost £500,000 has been spent on repairing and renewing 61264’s boiler – all funded privately by generous donations and loans from supporters. With the overhaul finally completed in December 2012, 61264 was moved to her new long-term home here at the NYMR, where she is now a mainstay of our locomotive roster.

The Thompson B1 Locomotive Trust operates and maintains ex-LNER class B1 4-6-0 no. 61264.

Fares for the LNER Excursions start from just £27.00 for adults, £23.00 for concessions and £15.00 for children. Fares will include a pre-booked seat and a return journey from Pickering to Grosmont.
