Volunteer on the railway
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is operated by a combination of volunteers and paid staff. The contribution of all members is vital in running the Railway. You could be the person that keeps the NYMR working.
We are always looking for interested people who can spare some time, however little. There are a wide variety of activities that can be undertaken from footplate work, through to signalling, engineering, Guarding, Ticket Inspecting, shops and catering. You don’t even need any specific skills or previous railway experience, as full training will be given. You can turn your hand to anything, meet new people, and gain worthwhile skills and a real sense of achievement.
You can volunteer in:
- Administration – General railway admininstration
- Catering – Work in our tea rooms along the railway
- Carriage and Wagon – Repair and maintain our carriage and wagon fleet
- Engine Driver/Fireman – Drive and fire our magnificent engines!
- Engineering – Learn practical engineering skills
- Marketing – Give support to the marketing of the railway
- Operating – Ticket Inspecting, Guarding, Booking offices, Station Staff and signalmen.
- Permanent Way – Maintain our 18 miles of track
- Shops – Help out in our retail facilities
- Signalling & Telecommunications – Maintain our signalling equipment and help look after our telephone and IT equipment
- Station Groups – Join one of our station groups and help maintain our superb stations
Our present volunteers come from all over the country, and even from overseas. Whatever time you have to spare, the Railway will appreciate your commitment. Volunteer accommodation is available. Working volunteers are entitled to a discount in Railway Shops and Tea Rooms. To be a volunteer you need to be member of the railway. To find out more click here.
In addition we often have particular requirements for volunteers in specific roles – some of which can be quite specialised. For a list of some of these please click here.
