On show in the heart of the city, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) has marked the start of its 2017 season with an artistic masterpiece.

The incredible 3m by 4m vinyl art work can be seen in all its glory outside York Art Gallery in Exhibition Square and is creating a real stir with passers-by. 

The fantastic piece, which was created by London-based firm, Graffiti Life, uses inspiration from art traditionally found in railways and shows the public of York the amazing experience they have right on their doorstep at NYMR. The art depicts Royal Scot arriving into Grosmont Station which people can come and see for themselves from 25^th March.* 

Laura Strangeway, Marketing Manager at North Yorkshire Moors Railway, said: “We are over the moon at how the artwork turned out and we want to say a huge thank you to everyone who came to see it. 

“A lot of work has gone in to setting all this up and we’re very appreciative of all the help we have received, especially from John Oxley, City Archaeologist and Keith Emerick from Historic England, who were so easy to work with and helped us confirm this wonderful location. We have a feeling that York now has a few more train enthusiasts who we hope to see up at the railway very soon!”

Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, Sir Gary Verity said: “This amazing 3D artwork really has the wow factor, just like the spectacular Yorkshire countryside the Royal Scot will be travelling through during its stay in the county. There are few better ways to enjoy the beauty of the North York Moors than by travelling on this world leading heritage railway line, with its beautifully restored carriages, and this iconic steam engine.”

The artwork will remain in Exhibition Square until 31^st January and there is absolutely no cost to go and see it. The railway is encouraging everyone who sees the artwork to let NYMR know by using the hash tag #NYMaRt.

In 2017 the railway celebrates 50 years since the formation of the NYMR Preservation Society, forerunner of the current Charitable Trust (1967 - 2017) and to set the wheels in motion for this anniversary year, popular locomotive, Royal Scot, will steam in to the attraction and set off the new season in style.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the most historic lines in the North of England, taking visitors on picturesque journeys along an 18 mile railway line aboard steam and heritage diesel trains
