Line Guide – Whitby to Battersby
Our line has been extended to run on certain days along the full length of the Esk Valley line (see timetable). The 24-mile line runs through the beautiful Esk Valley, between the port of Whitby and Battersby.
Whitby Station
Whitby is a great family day out, with its ancient abbey, stunning coastline, and deliciously fresh fish and chips. We’d recommend a trip to the Magpie Cafe, described by Rick Stein as ‘the best fish and chip shop in Britain’.
Elizabeth the Steam Bus – Take a ride around town on “Elizabeth” – a 1931 Sentinel Steam bus. Running daily to coincide with NYMR services, this last remaining 3-axle coal-fired bus will help you to relive the glory of steam during your visit to the town.
Grosmont Station
Is the terminus for NYMR and houses our locomotive sheds, tearoom and two shops with many interesting items available. The station has been restored to the British Railways’ style of the 1960s.
Things to see and do:
- Engine sheds – See where the engines are maintained and repaired
- Shed shop – Selling memorabilia, gifts, drinks, model railways, books and much more!
- Grosmont tea room – Visit our tea room on the station and watch the trains
- Grosmont shop – Buy a selection of NYMR products, books, and clothing
- Grosmont Gallery – – with paintings, pottery, sculpture and high quality craft items much of which is produced by local artists, accompanied by the sounds of smooth jazz - http://www.grosmontgallery.com
- The Station Tavern – After a thirsty day on the railway, visit the pub! – http://www.stationtavern-grosmont.co.uk
Glaisdale Station
Glaisdale offers many walks from the station and is a great location to alight and walk through the surrounding countryside. It was once an ironstone-mining village and many slate-roofed cottages can be seen in the area. The Arncliffe Arms is close to the station for food and refreshments.
Danby Station
About half a mile from the station lies the Moors Centre and is the main information centre for the National Park. It has a cafeteria, gift shop, picnic and play area. Danby Castle, Duck Bridge and a restored water mill are close by too. It is also an excellent place for walking.
Castleton Station
Castleton village is one of the largest villages on the moors and boasts a number of key services. The Eskdale Inn provides food so why not enjoy a walk on the moors and visit the pub for lunch?
Battersby Station
Battersby was an important junction with vast loads of ironstone from Rosedale, Glaisdale and Grosmont passing through to Teesside to feed the blast furnaces. It is an excellent place for walkers to alight.
Everyone at North Yorkshire Moors Railway looks forward to welcoming you aboard.
