NORTH YORKSHIRE MOORS RAILWAY LAUNCHES “CASH FOR COAL” APPEAL
Fuel cost rises are not just affecting households and road users; the North Yorkshire Moors Railway has been hit by a doubling in coal costs in less than five years, which has prompted a fundraising campaign for 2012 called ‘Cash for Coal’, launched today in Pickering.
The railway, which is a registered charity, uses around 2500 tonnes of coal each year to fuel its steam engines, which run on the 24 mile stretch between Pickering and Whitby.
Says NYMR’s general manager, Philip Benham:
“We’ve all seen the cost of operating a car increase – in the last five years, an average litre of diesel has risen from 97p in 2007 to £1.43 per litre today, which affects the diesel engines that we operate, but the difference in coal has been even more pronounced, doubling in price and massively increasing our running costs.
“We realise that for many families and others on tight budgets in these difficult times, price is vitally important, and are reluctant to put up fares to cover these costs. Rather, we are inviting a £1 donation ‘to buy a shovelful of coal’ from those who feel they can afford it. But I must stress, these contributions to our ‘Cash for Coal’ appeal are entirely voluntary. Whether they wish to donate or not, most of all we want our visitors to enjoy their day on our Railway and the spectacular North Yorkshire scenery.”
The Railway is able to claim back around 24p of tax per donated pound from donations made by UK taxpayers using the Gift Aid scheme, which will further help boost the coal bunker coffers.
Donations can be made on the trains or at any of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway stations, or by texting COAL12 £1 to 70070 or online at http://www.justgiving.com/nymc
Daily services resume on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on 31 March for the school Easter holidays. Fares are £22.50 for adults, £19.50 for seniors and £11.30 for children for a day rover ticket allowing unlimited travel between Pickering and Whitby. A family ticket (two adults and up to four children) is available for just £45.00. Children under five ride free.

Lights, Camera, Action for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway along with two of their volunteers Stephen Hogg and Gerry Skelton (one of the Railways most experienced drivers) will appear in the hour long episode that this week focuses on Yorkshire as Hugh Dennis and Julia Bradbury explore the Great British Countryside.
Marketing Manager Danielle Bradley explains “Hugh Dennis enjoyed a fantastic day out on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway last September. So much so, that the BBC film crew came back in early December with a helicopter to shoot some fantastic aerial shots of the Pullman dining train, steaming through the North York Moors National Park.”
Trains will be running once more on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on weekends from Saturday 3rd to Sunday 25th March with daily services resuming for the summer from Saturday 31st March until Sunday 4th November.

Cash for Coal
Did you know the price of coal has doubled in 5 years, and our railway uses over 2,500 tons a year?
Rather than put this extra cost onto our fares, we are inviting passengers to ‘buy a shovelful’ of coal with a suggested donation of £1 per passenger.
This is entirely voluntary of course – but your support will be gratefully appreciated and help the railway keep steaming on for years to come.
To donate, see the envelopes that are placed on the tables on our services.
