Record Crowds at NYMR’s Railway in Wartime Event
Visitors stepped back in time at the weekend for a nostalgic trip to war time Britain. Pickering hosted the 19th Railway in Wartime weekend which attracted thousands of people to North Yorkshire over three days.
The weekend started with a flag-raising ceremony on Friday to commemorate people who lost their lives on the railways and also as a sign of handing the railway over to the military.
Over the following three days re-enactments, parades and demonstrations took place along the line, with Whitby taking part for the first time. Highlighting the spirit of the Home Front in 1943, the stations had displays on the Home Guard, Anderson shelters, food and cookery, as well as entertainment from singers and musicians. The station at Levisham was transformed into a rural continental station of Le Visham and featured a replica flying V1 bomb.
Philip Benham, the railway’s General Manager said,
‘We’ve had a hugely successful event this year. It seems that the further we are away from the war the greater the interest we have in this event. At the heart of it is the commemoration of those who served on the home front. Several hundred railwaymen were killed on duty and they can sometimes be forgotten for their bravery in keeping the railways running through the most difficult of times.
Between 1939 and 1944 the railways were subjected to more than 9,000 bombing raids but despite this the Germans were never able to successfully completely paralyse the network. The people who worked on the railways were the unsung heroes and our event aims to serve as a reminder of their vital role
We’ll be turning the clocks back to 1943 on 12-14 October next year.”

Royal seal for Pickering Station project
A visit from HRH The Duke of Gloucester officially marked the completion of the transformation of Pickering Station at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
The Duke, who arrived at Pickering Station on the footplate of visiting engine Foxcote Manor toured the new facilities and unveiled a plaque to commemorate the restoration of the station roof.
The station restoration project, called Train of Thought, was supported by just under £1million from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The Duke was shown around the new Reussner Learning Centre, and was particularly keen to see a display of artefacts from the railway’s historical archives, including a map of the station dating from 1905. He also toured the newly completed visitor centre and unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the event.
He was greeted at the station by a group of dignitaries, including The Deputy Lord Lieutenant Commodore Paul Sutermeister; The High Sheriff, Alexandra Holford; Chairman of North Yorkshire County Council Councillor, John Fort; Ryedale Council Chairman, Councillor Steve Arnold; Pickering Town Council Mayor, Councillor Joan Lovejoy; and Ken Wyatt, Committee Member for Heritage Lottery Fund Yorkshire and the Humber.
The Duke also met members of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and contractors who were involved in the restoration projects.
Speaking about the event, NYMR Chairman Murray Brown said: “We love recreating the past here at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and putting the roof back on Pickering Station sixty years after it was taken down is a lovely example of this. We’re so pleased that the Duke of Gloucester was here to officially commemorate ‘raising of the roof’. I would like to thank all the staff, volunteers and members who made it happen.”
Station roof painting
We’ve now got a new work of art to go with our new station roof at Pickering. Our resident artist Christopher Ware has spent the summer working on a painting to capture the atmosphere of the station now that it all comes under the one roof. Light Duties shows the standard tank shunting in the station as the afternoon sun floods in through the arches.
The picture will feature as a painting and limited edition print at Chris’s Art, Jazz & Steam event at Levisham Station during the Autumn Steam Gala on Sept 30-Oct 2. Both tea huts are open all weekend along with a beer tent in the Levisham paddock and an art exhibition in the marquee. Chris’s studio in Station House is also open to visitors. On Saturday 1st Ronnie Burnett’s Mardi Gras Band plays 12–4pm, while on Sunday 2nd Hunmanby Silver Band will feature 1–3pm.
And if you can’t get along, why not look at the painting on Chris’s newly re-launched website www.wareHouseart.com?
