Time, please, gentlemen – The story of a man who had time on his hands

One of the last items to complete the beautiful new roof at Pickering station which has been designed to replicate the original by the North Eastern Railway architect, G.T. Andrews, has been the installation of the Jubilee clock, so named because it was originally unveiled in 1977.

The clock was built by John Walker company, London in 1905. Many of this manufacturer’s clocks were for the railways and this one, No. 8458, was bought by the London & South Western Railway for use at Woking. In Southern Railway days it was moved to Winchester where it remained until 1972, being replaced by a digital clock.

NYMR Chairman, Murray Brown, a keen preservationist, bought the clock for £10. After renovation, it was installed at Pickering where it has been since. It had to come down for the building works for the new station roof and also because it previously was suspended from one of the ugly awnings which BR put up when the original station roof was taken down in 1952.

The clock has had some further attention when the main spring broke but is now fully functional.

Of interest is that there are three former Southern Railway locomotives based on the NYMR which would have gone past the clock on a daily basis when it was at Winchester.

There remains just one problem – someone with a head for heights has to climb up to wind up the clock every eight working days!

Said Murray Brown: “The York Area and the Northallerton Area Groups of the NYMR have kindly contributed towards its repair and installation – this is much appreciated. The mechanism is British craftsmanship at its finest – the horologist who mended the spring was full of admiration. I hope my main spring lasts this long!”
